Why join

Make an impact, together

Summer Projects is the Summer Camp classic: the track you have most likely heard about. Whether you’re a developer, an engineer or a curious person, this is a chance to grow, give back, and share the ride with others who care about the future of video tech.

  • Learn from peers while building something real and useful.
  • Connect with the global media-tech community.
  • Explore and test new ideas in a safe, collaborative space.
  • Get visibility for your work during Summer Week in Montevideo.

The community and the passion to learn and work together has been the highlight of my career. When I started in software 5 years ago, I could never — even in my wildest dreams — have come up with something like this.

Ways to take part

Three ways to join a project

Tech Sponsor

Support technically, help unblock, join weekly syncs.

  • One sponsor per project
  • Weekly sync with the team
  • You guide, you don’t build alone

Industry Supporter

Help validate the problem and guide impact.

  • You know the problem from the industry side
  • You keep the project honest
  • No code involved

Contributor

Join an existing project and help build something that matters.

  • You pick a project you like
  • Async work plus one call a week
  • Engineers, builders and video enthusiasts

The 2027 theme

Hasta la vista, downtime!

Operating Global Streaming in the Age of Agents

Every project of this edition hangs from that thread, and lands in one of these three verticals. You don’t have to solve the thread — you have to bring a problem that pulls at it.

Live Engineering & Operations

Everything it takes to build the pipeline and keep it running: engineering is the art of building the tools, operations the art of keeping them alive.

  • Encoding and transport
  • Remote and cloud production, low-latency contribution, teams spread across countries
  • Monitoring and observability of distributed operations, 24/7 live workflows
  • Multi-region delivery, CDN cost and latency
  • AI copilots that help teams operate live

Global Accessibility

How content reaches every audience in the world, in their language, on their screen and in their market.

  • Live captions, translation and dubbing, audio description, sign language
  • Content discovery, metadata and recommendations by region
  • Rights, blackouts and availability by country
  • A consistent experience across devices, markets and low-connectivity networks
  • Provenance of content that travels between countries

Monetization

How global scale turns into a sustainable business.

  • Local advertising, ad insertion by region and FAST channels
  • Measurement across platforms, QoE by country, data and personalization
  • Content protection and piracy across borders
  • Cost per stream and infrastructure efficiency

Summer Projects 2026

Summer Projects grow every edition

David Hassoun and Kreig DuBose were at the last one. The projects grow, the people who build them grow, and open source is what brings a very diverse industry together.
